Week 5 post Raiders

The opening scenes of the Raiders of the Lost Ark open with Jones coming down a shoot to evade a boulder from smashing him in which he runs into Belloq. Jones has just acquired the idol but must hand it over to escape alive. These two men are rivals throughout the movie, Jones shows strong characteristics of individualism which mercenaries usually do. This characteristic was on showcase through the first movie Temple of Doom but soon changes in this movie. Jones progress is shown throughout the movie as he changes from his individualist approach and accepts the role of an ideal government. This ideal government being the protection of Marian, early on in the movies he cared not of Marian and only of the idol to acquire a pay day. This mercenary mind set was overturned as his relationship with Marian becomes one of protection after his Old mentor has died which is Marian's father. This was his way of repaying his debt in which he admired her father.
Once Jones rescues Marian from the pit of snakes he then becomes a knight indentured, his allegiance to an ideal government and someone other than himself is achieved. This becomes clear as his mission becomes centered around saving Marian and rescuing the Ark. In the end he chooses Marian over the Ark by not reserving the Ark and letting it be preserved. Jones returns to America not to collect a reward for the Ark but hand it over to the American government. This shows his acceptance of authority in terms of a government is complete. The knight journey doesn't end here as Jones isn't
happy with the way the government has chosen to take care of the Ark and its incredible power.
